MINI Cooper/ MINI Cooper S tuned by John Cooper Works – a cooperation between John Cooper Works (JCW) and BMW Group.  John Cooper Works have more than 40 years of historically grown experience in motor tuning, in association with the latest computer technologies and vehicle durability tests leading into new dimensions of engine performance enhancement.  Even today the name John Cooper is closely connected with the MINI brand and his son, Mike, is continuing the relationship with John Cooper Works.  The BMW Group in association with John Cooper Works will exclusively distribute, worldwide, two different retrofit tuning kits for MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S.  Alongside both kits there will be additional sporty accessory products, such as alloy wheels and sport seats under the John Cooper Works brand name.

Product description

The MINI Cooper tuning kit consists of a machined cylinder head with higher compression, changed ECU software as well as an air filter system and rear silencer.  The MINI Cooper S kit includes a new more effective and more powerful supercharger and a modified cylinder head with better port flow . The ECU software is adjusted to the higher performance. A special sports rear silencer with low backpressure gives the car a powerful appearance.  JCW badges and silver painted engine covers are the visual highlights of the kit. Uniqueness will be documented by consecutive numbering of the engine badges and an enclosed certificate of authenticity.   JCW products will be distributed via BMW GB as current Original MINI Parts and Accessories. 

Warranty

The warranty of the JCW products is the same as the warranty period for any other MINI parts and accessories.  The warranty and TLC of the car will not be affected by the installation of the tuning kit, however the dealer must register the individual kit number together with the installation date and the VIN-number of the car on certificate enclosed with each kit.   A copy of which must be forwarded to the Warranty department at BMW (GB) and you should ensure that the following information is included:

VIN- Number, Kit-Number and mileage at the time of the installation of the kit.

Installation time

5 hours for the Cooper and 9 Hours for the Cooper S.  Installation instructions will be available from April 2003.

Sales arguments/advantages

Mike Cooper’s philosophy during the design and development of the JCW tuning kits was driven by the idea that only reliable tuning could fulfil the high standards and requirements of BMW Group, even for converted cars. In particular this related to durability, influence on other vehicle components and conformance to legal requirements. This is a important difference between JCW and various other vendors of aftermarket tuning kits. Many vendors disassemble the supercharger pulley inappropriately, or even by force and replace it with a smaller one. The damages to the supercharger that can arise from this (e.g. bearings) are not known.  At JCW the supercharger is completely replaced by an improved version from the newest generation with factory assembled pulley. 

John Cooper Works have developed a new modified cylinder head with increased inlet and exhaust port flow for both of the kits.  In conjunction with the optimised exhaust system and adjusted engine calibration the John Cooper Works tuning kits are entirely reliable systems.

This technically consistent concept lead to the fact that the JCW Tuning kits passed the extreme demands of the extensive durability and the hot and cold environmental test of BMW Group.  For this reason the usual warranty period of the vehicle will  not be affected from the retrofitting of a John Cooper Works Tuning Kit. 

Homologation

With installation of JCW tuning kits the legitimate homologation is guaranteed, according to the guidelines of European, Japanese and USA regulations. A manufacturers certificate will be delivered with the kits. Depending on specific country rules the car has to be demonstrated at an technical inspection authority for documentation of the technical changes in vehicle documents. The performance enhancement has to be notified to the insurance company by the vehicle owner. 

Special note:

Due to homologation regulations and warranty issues the sale and the fitting of tuning kits is allowed as a complete kit only.  Installation of individual components is not permitted. The sole exception to this is the John Cooper Works exhaust for MINI Cooper.
